Betoptic (Betaxolol)  Eye Drops
Each 5 ml vial contains Betaxolol hydrochloride USP 0.56% w/v equivalent to Betaxolol 0.5% w/v and Benzalkonium chloride NF 0.01% w/v in a sterile aqueous vehicle q.s.

Description
Betoptic (Betaxolol)  is a cardioselective beta-adrenergic receptor blocking agent for use in glaucoma. It reduces elevated as well as normal intraocular pressure, whether or not accompanied by glaucoma. It does not have significant membrane stabilising (local anaesthetic) activity and is devoid of intrinsic sympathomimetic action. Betaxolol is found to have minimal effect on pulmonary and cardiovascular parameters.

Indications
Betoptic (Betaxolol)  is indicated in the treatment of ocular hypertension and chronic open angle glaucoma. It may be used alone or in combination with other antiglaucoma drugs.

Dosage and Administration
The recommended dose is one to two drops of Betaxolol ophthalmic suspension 0.25% in the affected eye(s) twice daily. In some patients, the intraocular pressure lowering responses to Betaxolol may require a few weeks to stabilize. As with any new medication, careful monitoring of patients is advised. If the intraocular pressure of the patient is not adequately controlled on this regimen, concomitant therapy with pilocarpine and other miotics, and/or epinephrine and/or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors can be instituted.

Contraindications
Betaxolol is contraindicated in patients with sinus bradycardia greater than a first degree atrioventricular block, cardiogenic shock or a history of overt cardiac failure and in patients with hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation.

Therapeutic actions:
Betoptic belongs to a type of drugs known as beta-blockers. These medications block beta-receptors throughout the body: in lungs, heart, blood vessels. When given as eye drops, Betoptic interacts with receptors in the blood vessels of the eye, causing them to constrict. As a result, the amount of aqueous humour (watery fluid) that passes out of the blood vessels into the eye-ball is decreased. Betoptic also works by blocking beta-receptors in the area of the eye that actively produces watery fluid. This leads to the reduction of intraocular pressure.

Warning!

You should not wear soft contact lenses while you are taking Betaxolol. Betaxolol eye drops contains a preservative that can be absorbed by soft contact lenses, causing eye irritation and stinging.
