Catapres (Clonidine)  is an oral and topical antihypertensive drug.
   
Catapres belongs to a class of drugs called central alpha-adrenergic agonists. Clonidine tablets and patches are approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of high blood pressure. Catapres tablets contain the active ingredient clonidine hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called a centrally-acting antihypertensive. It is used to lower high blood pressure. However, Clonidine has been found to be useful in the treatment of alcohol, opiate, and nicotine withdrawal syndromes.

Catapres works by stimulating alpha receptors in the brain.

Catapres is most often prescribed for the treatment of hypertension. It has also been used to manage the symptoms of narcotic withdrawal, nicotine withdrawal, diabetes-associated diarrhea, diabetic neuropathy, hot flashes associated with menopause, and as an adjunct to manage severe cancer-related pain.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects noted with clonidine are tiredness, lethargy, drowsiness, constipation, and dry mouth. Headache, dizziness, fatigue, and weakness also occur with clonidine.
