Mode of Action

Glipizide is an antidiabetic medication which is used in those patients with adult maturity onset or non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM). It works by lowering blood sugar levels by stimulating the production and release of insulin from the pancreas. It also promotes the movement of sugar from the blood into the cells in the body which need it. These two mechanisms in conjunction with a diet low in sugar and fat allows diabetics to control their blood sugar levels more effectively.

Glipizide is in a class of drugs called sulfonylureas. It is used to help control blood sugar levels. It causes the pancreas to release insulin, which helps to lower blood sugar. Glipizide is used to treat type 2 diabetes along with diet, exercise, and insulin therapy, if necessary. Glipizide may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Possible Side Effects

Treatment with glipizide may increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease compared to treatment of diabetes with diet alone or diet plus insulin. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of treatment with glipizide. Know the signs and symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which include headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, fast heartbeat, sweating, tremor, and nausea.

Follow diet, medication, and exercise routines closely. Changing any of them can affect blood sugar levels.

Do not change your dose of glipizide without first talking to your doctor. Avoid alcohol. It lowers blood sugar and may interfere with diabetes treatment.

The Glucotrol XL extended release tablets (glipizide extended release tablets) should be swallowed whole. Do not chew, divide, or crush the tablets.

Patients 65 years of age and older may have a stronger reaction to glipizide and may require a reduced dose.
