Description

Risedronate Sodium (Actonel) is a prescription medicine used:
    • to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
    • to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis.
    • to prevent and treat osteoporosis in men and women that is caused by treatment with steroid medicines such as prednisone.
    • to treat Paget’s disease of bone in men and women. The treatment for Paget’s disease is very different than for osteoporosis and uses a different dose of Risedronate Sodium (Actonel).

What is it used for?

    * Treatment of osteoporosis in women who have passed the menopause and in men who are at high risk of fractures.

Use with caution in

    * People with conditions that cause difficulty swallowing or delayed passage of food through the foodpipe (oesophagus), eg narrowing or obstruction of the foodpipe.
    * People who cannot stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes.
    * Disorders of the parathyroid gland (gland that produces hormones responsible for regulating calcium metabolism).
    * Vitamin D deficiency.

Not to be used in

    * Children.
    * Severely decreased kidney function.
    * Low levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcaemia).
    * Pregnancy.
    * Breastfeeding.
    * Rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption (Actonel once a week tablets contain lactose).

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy.If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Side effects

    * Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, indigestion or abdominal pain.

    * Pain in joints, muscles or bones (musculoskeletal pain).
    * Difficulty or pain when swallowing (dysphagia).
    * Skin reactions, eg rash.
