Spironolactone (Aldactone)

Spironolactone (Aldactone)

Description

Spironolactone (Aldactone) flushes excess salt and water from the body and controls high blood pressure. It is used in the diagnosis and treatment of hyperaldosteronism, a consciously condition in which the adrenal gland secretes too much aldosterone (a hormone that regulates the body's salt and potassium levels).

Spironolactone (Aldactone) is also used in treating other conditions that require the elimination of excess fluid from the body. These conditions include congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disease, and low potassium levels in the blood. When used for high blood pressure treatment, Aldactone can be slowly taken alone or with other high blood pressure medications.

Aldactone tablets contain the active ingredient Spironolactone, which is a type of medicine called a potassium-sparing diuretic.

Spironolactone works by blocking the actions of a hormone in the body called aldosterone. This hormone is produced by glands found above the kidneys called the adrenal glands. Aldosterone acts in the kidneys, where it is involved in controlling the balance of salt and water in the body. One of the main functions of the kidneys is to retain salt (sodium chloride) and water in the body. In patients with heart failure and cirrhosis, increased levels of a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, called aldosterone, causes salt and fluid to be retained by the kidneys.

Blocking the action of aldosterone causes the kidneys to increase the amount of salts such as sodium that they filter out of the blood and into the urine. When these salts are filtered out of the blood by the kidneys, water is also drawn alongside. Spironolactone therefore increases the amount of water that is drawn out of the blood and into the urine. This helps excess fluid to be removed from the body.

This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Spironolactone may enhance the blood pressure lowering effect of medicines used to treat high blood pressure (antihypertensives). If you are taking medicines for high blood pressure in combination with spironolactone and you frequently feel dizzy, you should let your doctor know as your medicine doses may need adjusting.

Dosage
Spironolactone may be taken with or without food. The dosage range is 25-400 mg daily in single or divided doses.

Side Effects
Side effects of spironolactone include headache,  diarrhea, cramps, drowsiness, rash, nausea, vomiting, impotence, irregular menstrual periods, and irregular hair growth. Fluid and electrolytes imbalance (for example, low sodium, low magnesium, and high potassium) may occur, so patients should be monitored carefully. Enlargement of the breasts (gynecomastia) may also occur and is related to dose and duration of therapy. It usually reverses upon discontinuation of spironolactone.

Aldactone reduces the amount of aldosterone (a hormone responsible for fluid balance in the body) produced by the adrenal glands. This effect is widely used by bodybuilders who, for example, reduce the amount of subcutaneous fluid during competitions.
Aldactone is a tool, a slight effect on the level of potassium in the body, its effect is much weaker compared with Dyazide and Lasix.
