Tobradex contains two active ingredients: tobramycin and dexamethasone.

Tobradex belongs to a type of medications called corticosteroids. Corticosteroids are used for reducing inflammation. Inflammation of the eye occurs because of injury or irritation to the eye. This leads to the release of various chemicals as a result of immune reaction. Blood vessels dilate and the affected area become painful, swollen and red. Dexamethasone works by inhibiting the release of these chemicals, reducing pain, swelling and redness.

Tobramycin is a antibiotic of the aminoglycoside family. This group of antibiotics has the ability to kill a wide variety of bacteria. Tobramycin works by reducing the production of proteins that are important for the bacteria to survive. It interacts with the bacterial cells, causing the bacteria produce abnormal proteins. The production of these abnormal proteins is ultimately fatal to the bacteria.

Indications: The combination of Dexamethasone and tobramycine eye drops is applied directly to the eye to prevent infection following cataract surgery and for reducing inflammation.
