Active Ingredients:
Heparin
Therapeutic actions:
Heparin is a naturally-occurring anticoagulant produced by basophils and mast cells. Heparin acts as an anticoagulant, preventing the formation of clots and extension of existing clots within the blood. While heparin does not break down clots that have already formed, it allows the bodyis natural clot lysis mechanisms to work normally to break down clots that have already formed.
What is it used for?:
Heparin is used to treat and prevent blood clots in the veins, arteries, or lung. Heparin is also used before surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots.
It is also used for:
• Anticoagulant therapy in prophylaxis and treatment of venous thrombosis and its extension;
• In low-dose regimen for prevention of postoperative deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in patients undergoing major abdomino-thoracic surgery or who for other reasons are at risk of developing thromboembolic disease (see DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION);
• Prophylaxis and treatment of pulmonary embolism;
• Atrial fibrillation with embolization;
• Diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic consumption coagulopathies (disseminated intravascular coagulation);
• Prophylaxis and treatment of peripheral arterial embolism.
• As an anticoagulant in blood transfusions, extracorporeal circulation, dialysis procedures, and in blood samples for laboratory purposes.
Contraindications and cautions:
• Severe thrombocytopenia.
• When suitable blood coagulation tests, e.g., the whole blood clotting time, partial thromboplastin time, etc., cannot be performed at appropriate intervals (this contraindication refers to full-dose heparin; there is usually no need to monitor coagulation parameters in patients receiving low-dose heparin);
Side effects:
• redness, pain, bruising, or sores at the spot where heparin was injected
• hair loss
Also may occur more serious effects:
• unusual bruising or bleeding
• vomit that is bloody or looks like coffee grounds
