Description
Dalteparin is used to treat or prevent blood clots in the veins, arteries, or lung that can be caused by cancer or certain heart conditions. Dalteparin is also used before surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots.

Therapeutic actions:
Dalteparin is a low molecular weight heparin with antithrombotic properties. It acts by enhancing the inhibition of Factor Xa and thrombin by antithrombin. In man, dalteparin potentiates preferentially the inhibition of coagulation Factor Xa, while only slightly affecting the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT).
What is it used for?:
Preventing blood clots in patients who have certain illnesses or who will be having certain types of surgeries. It is also used along with aspirin to prevent certain problems caused by heart attacks or unstable angina (chest pain). It is also used to reduce the recurrence of blood clots in certain cancer patients. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Fragmin is an anticoagulant. It works by thinning the blood.
Contraindications and cautions:
Do not use Fragmin if:
• you are allergic to any ingredient in Fragmin or to heparin or pork products
• you have uncontrolled major bleeding
• you have uncontrolled high blood pressure
• you are receiving Fragmin for unstable chest pain or heart attack and will be receiving local anesthesia

Unusual side effects:
Pain, swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site.
More serious effects:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); unusual bruising or bleeding.
Interactions:
Fragmin may interact with the following: Activated protein C, penicillins given by injection (eg, ampicillin), cephalosporins given by injection (eg, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen, naproxen), salicylates (eg, aspirin), or thrombolytics (eg, streptokinase) because the risk of side effects, such as bleeding, may be increased.
