Active Ingredients: Ceftriaxone
Therapeutic actions: Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) works by inhibiting the mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. The beta-lactam moiety of Ceftriaxone binds to carboxypeptidases, endopeptidases, and transpeptidases in the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane. These enzymes are involved in cell-wall synthesis and cell division. By binding to these enzymes, Ceftriaxone results in the formation of of defective cell walls and cell death.
What is it used for?: • LOWER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS; • ACUTE BACTERIAL OTITIS MEDIA; • SKIN AND SKIN STRUCTURE INFECTIONS; • URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS (complicated and uncomplicated); • UNCOMPLICATED GONORRHEA (cervical/urethral and rectal); • PELVIC INFLAMMATORY DISEASE; • BACTERIAL SEPTICEMIA; • BONE AND JOINT INFECTIONS; • INTRA-ABDOMINAL INFECTIONS; • MENINGITIS; • SURGICAL PROPHYLAXIS.
Contraindications and cautions: • allergy to any ingredient in Rocephin or to any other cephalosporin antibiotic (eg, cephalexin, cefprozil) • the patient is a newborn with high blood bilirubin (hyperbilirubinemia)
Side effects: Serious side effects: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site; seizures; severe diarrhea; stomach cramps/pain; vaginal irritation or discharge; yellowing of the skin or eyes. Less serious side effects: mild diarrhea; nausea; vomiting.
Interactions:
Rocephin (Ceftriaxone) may increase the risk of side effects of aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin), anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), cyclosporine, or heparin.
