Therapeutic actions:
Pancreatin is a digestive enzyme that is used to supplement loss of or low levels of digestive enzymes, and is often used in people with cystic fibrosis. It has been claimed to help with food allergies, celiac disease, autoimmune disease, cancer, and weight loss. Pancreatin is also known as pancreatic acid.
What is it used for?: (Indications:)
Use in cases of problems with the pancreas, stomach, intestines, liver, bladder, gas in the intestines and stomach, diarrhea from non-infectious origins. Festal is recommended for persons who have gastrointestinal disorders that prohibit the proper digestion of food and absorption of nutrients. In addition this preparation is helpful for persons with immobile life styles or for recovery after long-term immobilization.
Contraindications and cautions:
Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity, excess amount of bilirubin (a liver by product that produces jaundice), gallbladder and liver diseases, mechanical jaundice and blockage of the intestines. Use with care in cases of vascular or heart problems, and with children under four years of age.
Side effects:
The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
Side effects include allergic reactions, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pains, increased uric acid in the blood. In cases of over dosage the level of uric acid content in the blood plasma and urine will increase.

Interactions:
Tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are already taking, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with this medicine. Lowers bioavailability of Fe preparations. Intensifies absorption of para-aminosalicylic acid, sulfanilamids, antibiotics. Cimetidin amplifies the effect of Festal. Antacids which contain ions of Mg 2+ or Ca2+ decrease the effect of Festal.
