Therapeutic actions:
Naphazoline constricts the vascular system of the conjunctiva. It is presumed that this effect is due to direct stimulation action of the drug upon the alpha adrenergic receptors in the arterioles of the conjunctiva resulting in decreased conjunctival congestion. Naphazoline belongs to the imidazoline class of sympathomimetics.
What is it used for?:
Naphcon-A is indicated for use as a topical ocular vasoconstrictor.
Contraindications and cautions:
• Hypersensitivity to the medicine components.
• Donit use Naphcon-A if you have taken furazolidone or a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor (eg, phenelzine) within the last 14 days; if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or trouble urinating because of enlargement of the prostate gland.
• Naphcon-A is not recommended for use in CHILDREN younger than 6 years of age. Safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been confirmed.
Side effects:
• Eye redness;
• tingling sensation. Seldom: rash; hives; difficulty breathing; blurred vision; tightness in the chest; eye pain; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); changes in vision; halos around lights; persistent redness or irritation.
Interactions:
Furazolidone or MAO inhibitors (eg, phenelzine) taken together with Naphcon-A may increase the risk of severe high blood pressure and fast heartbeat
