Description
Salmeterol is a bronchodilator. It works by relaxing muscles in the airways to improve breathing.
Salmeterol inhalation is used to prevent asthma attacks.

Therapeutic actions:
Selective beta2 adrenergic agonists of prolonged action; in therapeutic dozes does not have effect on cardiovascular system. It is proved, that Salmeterol causes in patients with inversive respiratory obstruction long-term (up to 12 h) expansion of bronchial tubes. Regular intake of the medicine provides stabil improvement of lungs functioning, depressing intensity of the respiratory obstruction syndrome and night bronchial asthma attacks.
Experiments in vitro have shown that Salmeterol is powerful and long-term inhibitor of clearings from mast cells such mediators like histamine, leukotrienes and prostaglandin D2.
Serevent depresses early and late bronchial tubes reactivity.
The beginning Serevent effect is marked after 5-10 mines from the moment of inhalation. Broncholytic effect lasts 12 h.
What is it used for?:
Adults:
- long-term regular treatment inversive respiratory obstruction at bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive illness of lungs (including chronic obstructive bronchitis and lungs emphysema);
- for the prevention of symptoms during the night and/or day time, caused by inversive respiratory obstruction, including before physical activity or influence of allergen.
Children:
- regular treatment of patients with inversive respiratory obstruction at bronchial asthma (including preventive maintenance of the bronchospasm caused by physical activity).
Contraindications and cautions:
Hypersensitivity to Sereventis componrnts.
Side effects:
Common side effects:
Headache; nasal or sinus congestion; nervousness; stuffy nose; throat irritation; tremor.
Severe side effects:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; chest pain; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat; unusual hoarseness); severe or persistent headache or dizziness; choking; fever; new or worsening asthma symptoms (eg, increased chest tightness, coughing, shortness of breath, or wheezing); fast or irregular heartbeat;overexcitement; severe or persistent muscle pain or cramps.
Interactions:
If using Serevent simultaneously with xanthine derivants, glucocorticoids and diuretics the risk of hypokalemia occurrence, especially in patients with bronchial asthma aggravation, and also at hypoxia increases (in such cases it is necessary to supervise strictly the potassium level in blood plasma).
