Description
Terazosin is in a group of drugs called alpha-adrenergic blockers. It causes the blood vessels (veins and arteries) to relax and expand, improving blood flow. Terazosin also relaxes muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate. It is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

Therapeutic actions:
Hytrin is an alpha-blocker. It works by relaxing muscles in the blood vessels, resulting in lowering of blood pressure. In BPH, alpha-blockers work by relaxing muscles around the urethra (tube that drains urine from the bladder), which improves urinary symptoms.
What is it used for?:
• Treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
• Treatment of hypertension. It can be used alone or in combination with other antihyper-tensive agents such as diuretics or beta-adrenergic blocking agents.
Contraindications and cautions:
Allergy to any ingredient in Hytrin or to similar medicines (eg, prazosin).
Side effects:
Serious side effects: severe allergic reactions (hives; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue itching; difficulty breathing; rash; tightness in the chest;); chest pain; decreased sexual ability; difficulty breathing; easy bleeding or bruising; ringing in the ears; blurred vision; fainting; painful penile erection; pounding or tightness in the chest; swelling of the hands or feet.
Less serious side effects: dizziness; drowsiness; nasal congestion;; feeling of a whirling motion; headache; lightheadedness; dry mouth nausea; weakness.
Interactions:
Severe dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting may be provoked by phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (eg, sildenafil) or verapamil.
