Common name
Augmentin (Amoxicillin Clavulanate)
Description
Active Ingredients:
Amoxicillin Clavulanate
Therapeutic actions:
Amoxicillin is a semisynthetic antibiotic with a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against many gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms. Amoxicillin is, however, susceptible to degradation by β-lactamases, and therefore, the spectrum of activity does not include organisms which produce these enzymes. Clavulanic acid is a β-lactam, structurally related to the penicillins, which possesses the ability to inactivate a wide range ofβ-lactamase enzymes commonly found in microorganisms resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins. In particular, it has good activity against the clinically important plasmid-mediated β-lactamases frequently responsible for transferred drug resistance.
What is it used for?:
Amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium is used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria, such as:
• sinusitis,
• pneumonia,
• ear infections,
• bronchitis,
• urinary tract infections,
• and infections of the skin.
Contraindications and cautions:
If you have ever had an allergic reaction to penicillin or to a cephalosporin, you may also be allergic to amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium.
Before taking amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, tell your doctor if you have:
• liver disease (or a history of hepatitis or jaundice);
• kidney disease; or
• mononucleosis.

• Augmentin is effectiveness may be decrease by chloramphenicol, macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromycin), sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole), or tetracycline antibiotics (eg, doxycycline);
• Augmentin may increase risk of Methotrexateis side effects;
