Description
Clarithromycin is
used for mild or moderate bacterial infections. It works against several
different bacteria, especially chlamydia, hemophilus and streptococcus. These
bacteria can infect the skin, nose, throat, lungs and ears.

Clarithromycin
Therapeutic actions:
Biaxin is a macrolide antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of or killing sensitive bacteria by reducing the production of important proteins needed by the bacteria to survive.
What is it used for?:
Clarithromycin is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections affecting the skin and respiratory system. Clarithromycin is also used together with other medicines to treat stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori.
Contraindications and cautions:
• liver disease;
• kidney disease;
• porphyria; or
• a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome.
Side effects:
Serious: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; severe stomach pain/cramps; decreased urination; depression; emotional or mood changes; nightmares; confusion; severe diarrhea; hallucinations; trouble sleeping.
Less serious: abnormal taste; diarrhea; headache; indigestion; nausea; stomach discomfort; vomiting.
Interactions:
• Biaxin is effectiveness may be decreased by Rifampin;
• Dofetilide, macrolides and ketolides (eg, erythromycin, azithromycin), pimozide, QT-prolonging agents (eg, quinidine, sotalol, thioridazine), quinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin), or streptogramins (eg, mikamycin) may provoke serious, possibly life-threatening side effects on the heart or irregular heartbeat;
• Biaxin Filmtab may increase actions and the risk of side effects of anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), aldosterone blockers (eg, spironolactone), benzodiazepines (eg, alprazolam), buspirone, carbamazepine, cilostazol, cisapride, colchicine, corticosteroids (eg, hydrocortisone), cyclosporine, digoxin, disopyramide, eletriptan, ergot alkaloids (eg, ergotamine , dihydroergotamine), H1 antagonists (eg, terfenadine, astemizole), HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (eg, simvastatin), imatinib, macrolide immunosuppressants (eg, tacrolimus), macrolides and ketolides (eg, erythromycin, azithromycin), phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (eg, sildenafil), rifampin, sumatriptan, theophyllines, or verapamil.
