Therapeutic actions:
Zinacef (Cefuroxime)
is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by interfering with the formation of the bacteriais cell wall so that the wall ruptures, resulting in the death of the bacteria.
What is it used for?:
Zinacef (Cefuroxime), a cephalosporin antibiotic, is prescribed for mild to moderately severe bacterial infections of the throat, lungs, ears, skin, sinuses, and urinary tract, and for gonorrhea. Zinacef (Cefuroxime) tablets are also prescribed in the early stages of Lyme disease.
Contraindications and cautions:
• Allergy to cefuroxime, or to similar antibiotics, such as Ceclor, Cefzil, Duricef, Fortaz, Keflex, Omnicef, Spectracef, Suprax, and others.
• Allergy to any drugs (especially penicillin).
• Liver or kidney disease,
• Diabetes,
• Heart failure,
• Cancer,
• A stomach or intestinal disorder
Side effects:
Less serious: diarrhea/loose stools; nausea; vomiting.
Serious: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; change in the amount of urine; dark urine; easy bruising or bleeding; fatigue; fever; seizures; severe diarrhea; stomach cramps/pain; vaginal irritation or discharge; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Interactions:
• Aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin), cyclosporine, diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), or other medicines affecting the kidney may provoke side effects, such as kidney toxicity;
• Zinacef (Cefuroxime) may decrease effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives (eg, birth control pills).
