Description
Clindamycin is a lincomycin antibiotic. Clindamycin kills sensitive bacteria by stopping the production of essential proteins needed by the bacteria to survive.

Therapeutic actions:
Clindamycin phosphate is hydrolysed in vivo to clindamycin, which inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome and thereby prevents peptide bond formation.
What is it used for?:
Skin and soft tissue infections
Respiratory tract infections
Bone and joint infections
Pelvic infections
Intra-abdominal infections
Septicaemia and endocarditis
Dental infections
Multi-drug resistant Plasmodium falciparum (malaria) infection
Contraindications and cautions:
Unusual or allergic reaction to clindamycin, lincomycin, or doxorubicin or allergy to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives, or dyes;
Kidney disease (severe);
Liver disease (severe)Severe kidney or liver disease may increase blood levels of this medicine, increasing the chance of side effects;
Stomach or intestinal disease, history of (especially colitis, including colitis caused by antibiotics, or enteritis).
Side effects:
Less serious: Infrequent urination; nausea; mild diarrhea; vomiting.
Serious: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); yellowing of skin or eyes; severe or continuing diarrhea; severe stomach cramps/pain; stools/diarrhea with mucus or blood.
Interactions:
Clindamycin may increase the risk of side effects of nondepolarizing muscle relaxants (eg, vecuronium) or succinylcholine;
Clindamycin is effectiveness may be decreased by Erythromycin.
