Description
Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others.

Therapeutic actions:
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. It works by slowing the growth of bacteria. Slowing bacteria is growth allows the body is immune system to destroy the bacteria.
What is it used for?:
• Treating infections caused by certain bacteria.
• In combination with other medicines to treat certain amoeba infections.
• Preventing or slowing the progression of anthrax after exposure.
Contraindications and cautions:
• Allergy to any ingredient in Doxycycline or to another tetracycline;
• Taking acitretin, a hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills), or a penicillin (eg, amoxicillin);
• Pregnancy;
• Breast-feeding;
• Liver or kidney disease;
• Children younger than 8 years old.
Side effects:
Less serious: Loss of appetite; nausea; sensitivity to sunlight; vomiting.
Serious: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); trouble swallowing; dark urine; decreased urination; stomach pain or cramps; fever, chills, or sore throat; severe diarrhea; severe or persistent headache; throat irritation; unusual joint pain; unusual tiredness; vaginal irritation or discharge; vision changes; yellowing of the skin or eyes; bloody stools; unusual bruising or bleeding.
Interactions:
• Doxycycline is effectiveness may be decreased by barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), carbamazepine, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), or penicillinsbecause;
• Acitretin or isotretinoin may provoke side effects, such as increased pressure inside the skull (resulting in severe headaches and vision problems);
• Use of anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), methotrexate, or methoxyflurane together with Doxycycline may increase the actions and side effects of these medicines;
• Doxycycline may decrease effectiveness of hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills).
