Description
Suprax (Cefixime) is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin (SEF a low spor in) antibiotics. It works by fighting bacteria in your body. Suprax (Cefixime) is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria.

Therapeutic actions:
Like all beta-lactam antibiotics, cefixime binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, causing the inhibition of the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins; it is possible that cefixime interferes with an autolysin inhibitor.
What is it used for?:
• Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections;
• Otitis Media;
• Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis;
• Acute Bronchitis and Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis;
• Uncomplicated gonorrhea .
Contraindications and cautions:
• allergy to any ingredient in Suprax (Cefixime) or to other cephalosporins (eg, cephalexin);
• forthcoming live typhoid vaccine
Side effects:
Less serious side effects: diarrhea; gas; loose stools; nausea; stomach pain or upset.
Serious side effects: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue; unusual hoarseness); bloody stools; decreased urination; fever; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin; seizures; severe diarrhea; severe nausea or vomiting; severe stomach pain or cramping; unusual bruising or bleeding; vaginal discharge or itching; white spots in the mouth; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Interactions:
• Suprax (Cefixime) may increase the risk of side effects of anticoagulants (eg, warfarin) or carbamazepine;
• Suprax (Cefixime) may decrease effectiveness of live typhoid vaccines.
