Lasix (Furosemide)
Description
Lasix (Furosemide) is a loop diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt, allowing the salt to instead be passed in your urine. Furosemide treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or a kidney disorder such as nephrotic syndrome. This medication is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Therapeutic actions:
Lasix is a loop diuretic. Loop diuretics make the kidneys eliminate larger amounts of electrolytes (especially sodium and potassium salts) and water than normal (diuretic effect). Loop diuretics are useful for treating many conditions in which salt and water retention (eg, edema, swelling) are a problem.
What is it used for?:
• in adults and pediatric patients for the treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and renal disease, including the nephrotic syndrome.
• in adults for the treatment of hypertension alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
Contraindications and cautions:
• allergy to any ingredient in Lasix;
• difficulty of urination;
• taking ethacrynic acid;
Side effects:
Serious side effects: severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); stomach pain; calf pain or tenderness; dark urine; decreased or persistent increased urination; unusual tiredness or weakness; restlessness; dry mouth; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever, chills, or sore throat; hearing decrease or loss; muscle pain/cramps/weakness; ringing in the ears; severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or dizziness; shortness of breath; confusion; sluggishness; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual thirst or hunger; vein inflammation; yellow vision; drowsiness;yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Less serious side effects: dizziness; lightheadedness; sensitivity to sunlight.
Interactions:
• the risk of low blood potassium levels may be increased by corticosteroids (eg, prednisone) or corticotropin (ACTH);
• the risk of dizziness upon standing may be increased by barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital) or narcotics (eg, codeine);
• serious side effects to the kidneys (decreased ability to urinate) or ears (hearing loss) may be provoked by aminoglycosides (eg, gentamicin), amphotericin B, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, captopril), cyclosporine, ethacrynic acid, tacrolimus, or vancomycin;
• side effects, such as excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat, and changes in blood pressure, may be provoked by chloral hydrate;
• Lasix is effectiveness may be decrease by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen, indomethacin);
• Lasix may increase the risk of side effects of digoxin, lithium, medicines for high blood pressure, salicylates (eg, aspirin), or succinylcholine;
• Lasix may decrease effectiveness of norepinephrine or tubocurarine.
