Arimidex is an aromatase inhibitor. It works by lowering blood estradiol concentrations, which may decrease the size and growth of the estrogen related tumor.

Therapeutic actions:
Treatment of breast cancer has included efforts to decrease estrogen levels, by ovariectomy premenopausally and by use of anti-estrogens and progestational agents both pre- and post-menopausally; and these interventions lead to decreased tumor mass or delayed progression of tumor growth in some women.
Anastrozole is a potent and selective non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor. It significantly lowers serum estradiol concentrations and has no detectable effect on formation of adrenal corticosteroids or aldosterone.
What is it used for?:
Arimidex is a first-line treatment of breast cancer in post menopausal women. It slows the growth of advanced cancer within the breast and cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. Arimidex is also used to treat advanced breast cancer in post menopausal women whose disease has spread to other parts of the body following treatment with tamoxifen (Nolvadex), another anticancer drug. Arimidex can also be prescribed along with other drugs to treat the early stages of breast cancer in post menopausal women.
Contraindications and cautions:
• Pregnancy;
• Allergy to the drugs components.
Side effects:
Severe side effects: swollen glands; a bone fracture; swelling in your hands or feet;
Less serious side effects: hot flashes; joint pain or stiffness; weakness; sore throat; depression, mood hanges; nausea; back pain, bone pain.
Interactions:
Anastrozoleis effect may be lowered if you take it simultaiously with tamoxifen or an estrogen medication.
There may be other drugs that can interact with anastrozole. Tell your doctor about all your prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors.
