Description
Sortis leads to lowering of cholesterol levels. Atorvastatin can help to lower the blood cholesterol for patients who are at risk of getting the heart disease or a stroke. It is only for patients whose cholesterol level is not controlled by the diet.

Therapeutic actions:
Lipitor is an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor. Lipitor blocks the production of Cholesterol (a type of fat) in the body.
What is it used for?:
Sortis is used to reduce the amounts of LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides (another type of fat), and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in your blood. Sortis is also used to increase the level of HDL (good) cholesterol in your blood. These actions are important in reducing the risk of hardening of the arteries, which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Sortis may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Contraindications and cautions:
Tell your doctor if you have any of these conditions:
• an alcohol problem
• any hormone disorder (such as diabetes, under-active thyroid)
• blood salt imbalance
• infection
• kidney disease
• liver disease
• low blood pressure
• muscle disorder or condition
• recent surgery
• seizures (convulsions)
• severe injury
• an unusual or allergic reaction to atorvastatin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with Sortis.
The interaction could lead to potentially dangerous effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit and grapefruit juice with your doctor. Do not increase or decrease the amount of grapefruit products in your diet without first talking to your doctor.
Side effects:
Those usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
• diarrhea
• gas
• headache
• joint pain
• nausea, vomiting
• stomach upset or pain
• tiredness
Tell your prescriber or health care professional as soon as you can if you get any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if you also have a fever and tiredness.
Interactions:
Do not take Sortis without first talking to your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
• cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral);
• gemfibrozil (Lopid), clofibrate (Atromid-S), or fenofibrate (Tricor);
• niacin (Nicolar, Nicobid, Slo-Niacin, others);
• erythromycin (E-Mycin, E.E.S., Ery-Tab, others) or clarithromycin (Biaxin);
• cholestyramine (Questran) or colestipol (Colestid);
• hormonal birth control (pills, patches, or implants); or
• an antifungal medication such as itraconazole (Sporanox), fluconazole (Diflucan), or ketoconazole (Nizoral).
